Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir
Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir may be the most liberal – well-known – couple in history. They met while studying at the Ecole Normale SupĂ©rieure in Paris while preparing their last philosophy exam. Simone was always a lonely woman, her father taught her a love of books, while Sartre always lived at the expense of her social group; He was a spoiled and idolized boy who decided very young to go against the ideas, customs and thoughts that wanted to instill in him, for everything saw false and meaningless.
The two ambushed perfectly and their relationship revolved around an ideal well ahead of their time – the 20s and 30s – because they practiced polygamy. They never married, never lived together, and many fewer had children. When Jean Paul Sartre died, worn down by pulmonary edema, Simone dedicated a few words worthy of being immortal: "His death separates us. My death will reunite us. Better this way: it's already beautiful that our lives have been fitting together for so long."
