A cruel and sadistic General one day with his army entered a town. His men immediately set out to steal everything they could and wreak havoc. They raped women, killed children, set houses on fire and destroyed crops. When the general learned that there was a highly respected Zen master in the town, he set out to defeat him as well.
The General galloped up a hill outside the city and rode his horse into the Zen atrium. There, meditating on a cushion, was a small man. The General approached his horse towards him and placed the bloody sword on his head. The man looked at him in turn. Don't you realize that I can pierce you with this sword in less than a rooster crows? And don't you realize that I could be pierced with that sword in less than a rooster crows? The Zen master asked in turn. At this point it is said that the general was disoriented, after which he bowed his head and left the town.
